City endorsements: Wards 7 through 12

Reader comments

The following are our endorsements for Manchester's board of aldermen in wards 7 through 12.

Ward 7: Lisa Gravel. A mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Gravel is a political independent who was inspired to run for office last year when eight aldermen, including Ward 7's Bill Shea, voted against putting the spending cap on the ballot. Gravel, who signed the spending cap petition, wants to control costs, but she isn't dogmatic about it. She doesn't just offer "tax cuts" as the answer to every problem. She is refreshingly devoid of talking points, instead coming across as an independent thinker who wants to make Manchester a better place to live.

Ward 8: Christine Pariseau Telge. Co-owner of Milly's Tavern, Telge is active in The Salvation Army's charitable works and knows the struggles local business owners go through to thrive in this city. A political independent, Telge would provide Ward 8 with a fresh voice and the city with a much-needed perspective on the board. She supports the spending cap and wants to put her business and legal skills (she has a law degree) to work for the city. Ward 8 voters should give her the chance.

Ward 9: Michael Garrity. Alderman Garrity has proved himself a very involved ward representative as well as a voice for better spending. He has earned another term representing Ward 9 and trying to keep the budget under control.

Ward 10: Phil Greazzo. In the last few years, few activists have put as much energy into improving Manchester as Phil Greazzo has. His fight for a dog park has moved the city much closer to getting one; his activism for a spending cap raised awareness of the issue and held aldermen accountable for their terrible vote against it last year; and as a regular attendee at board meetings, he is the one who noticed that City Hall's assembly permit from the fire department had expired. Greazzo would be an energetic voice for taxpayers and Ward 10 residents. He deserves election.

Ward 12: Keith Hirschmann. A former alderman, Hirschmann has shown himself to be a consistent opponent of overspending and over-regulating the city. He knows what it's like to run a business here and to fight for better decision-making at City Hall. He supports the spending cap and would vote responsibly if elected.

City endorsements: Wards 1 through 6 (10)
Gatsas for mayor: Tame the budget (3)

YOUR COMMENTS

Just wanted to comment on ward 12 voting went into the school to place my vote and their on the wall is a picture of Obama book of the month.

Why is this up in a voting location?
- Jim Gosselin, Manchester

I was very pleased to see Pariseau-Telge running and that the Union Leader has endorsed her. He opponent, Betsi DeVries, has clearly shown she is only interested in representing city employees.
- Craig, Manchester, NH

Phil Greazzo is the kind of person I want representing me in City Hall. He does not snub off the concerns of his neighbors. He works hard in Ward 10 to build a strong community, and he will be the best thing that's happened to the Ward since Bill Cashin left his duties! GO PHIL! You have five votes in this family!
- Hon. Barbara J. Hagan, Ward 10 West Manchester

Is anyone else just plain tired of campaigns where the focus of their energy is trying to sling mud at their opponent? Or how about those campaigns who send people in to harass business owners because they have a sign for their opponent outside their business.

It's nice to see that Phil Greazzo has campaigned focusing on the residents in Ward 10 and what THEIR issues and concerns are....not on partisan distortions.

Shawn - trying to label Phil Greazzo as a freestater is ludicrous. He's lived on my street for 12 years....the Free State Project wasn't even founded until many years after Phil moved to Manchester!

Ward 10 voters - on Election Day, just remember the issues and who has bothered to discuss them with you.

Then fill in that little black circle next to Phil Greazzo's name.
- Tammy Simmons, Manchester

Jeff, the UL endorsed Ed Osborne, a Democrat, and Christine Pariseau-Telge, an independent who supported Barack Obama last year. Give it a rest.
- Carl, Manchester

Shawn,

You don't know what you're talking about. The dog park would be built and maintained by people who have already offered their materials and time. FREE OF CHARGE. Someone would have to be a complete idiot to oppose something that will cost the city nothing... which is, of course, why a year after it was proposed the aldermen have refused to move forward with it. Of course, the ski area has cost the city tens of thousands of dollars every year.

What kind of city are we running, that refuses a free dog park but insists on operating a ski area at a huge loss every year? It's time for a change, in ward ten and across the city.
- Keith, Manchester

Shawn,

George might be honest but you sure are not!! I've been living on Parker St. for twelve years. Six of them as Bill Cashin's neighbor. So try and sell the "freestater" garbage somewhere else.

You failed to mention we've waited eight years to see that ditch get turned into a usabel path. When the Parker St. bridge was rebuilt 7 years ago, all we need was for the bulldozer to make one pass through there to make it "usable" but that never happened, even though it would have been so simple.

If you're going to credit George with the trail, does he also get the credit for the missing crosswalk on S. Main, or the errosion problems the people along the path have not seen addressed, or the lack of a safety barrier keeping the cars on Parker Ave (that dead ends at the trail) from driving off the edge onto the people on the path below??

As for the Dog Park, I've been trying to get it built for the past year, for FREE at no cost to the taxpayer. However, George has created roadblocks every step of the way. His best site suggestion is the DUMP!! I think the people of Manchester deserve better!!!

Phil Greazzo

I was very happy to open the Union Leader and see an endorsement for Christine Pariseau-Telge. The residents of ward 8 have a chance to give themselves a real voice at city hall. Christine is a woman who will stand up for what she believes in and she will be a puppet for no one. She leads by example and pushes everyone around her to work harder, work smarter and never dismisses people because of their party affiliation. She listens first and speaks second, what a concept for a politician. From the Pariseau family, we thank the Union Leader for Christine's endorsement and ask that the residents of ward 8 brave the weather on Tuesday and vote Pariseau-Telge.
- Henry Pariseau IV, Manchester, NH

It seems funny that people in ward 10 are speaking up about George Smith not doing anything to improve their ward. I guess you haven't seen the new path that leads from the east of Manchester to the West Side Arena. Without George Smith that path would still be a mess with brown algae still growing. As a dog owner the idea of a Doggie park so that people have a place to take their animals to play with other animals is a very low priority in anyone’s book. If you feel that is a top priority then state to me how much you would shell out of your pocket to have this park built, maintained, and policed. I believe the city needs to clean up the cat problem first before they consider spending money on a doggie park. Don’t let the Free State people steer you wrong, they have not lived here long enough to know what this great city needs and they come and go as they please. I will be voting for George Smith because he is a honest man with the work ethic of a loved citizen of Manchester.
- Shawn, Manchester

Doug, I'm assuming you are a teacher. Why else would you support a tax and spender in a city election 35 miles from where you live. Why not just admit that your concern is for your next raise?

Mark Roy would be a disasterous choice to be Mayor of manchester. We need elected officials who will look out for the best interests of the taxpayers. Mark Roy only has the best interests of the municipal employee unions at heart.
- Ron, Manchester

To those who think the Union Leader only endorses Republicans - please, read a little and do your homework.

Yesterday, they endorsed O'Sullivan, Osborne, Pepino and Infantine. Today they endorsed Gravel, Pariseau-Telge, Greazzo and Hirschmann.

Osborne is a Democrat and Pariseau-telge and Gravel are independents.

It seems that the editors of this newspaper didn't pick by party but by who they felt would actually be good for their ward and for this city.

I know I am voting for Greazzo, but I didn't need the newspaper to tell me why. George Smith doesn't do anything for this ward.
- Sue, Manchester

How pathetic is that the Republicans don't have single candidate for alderman at-large or school board at-large!?
- Jim, Manchester

I am fairly new to Ward 10 , as a senior citizen , I have been a supported of Bill Cashin on all issues and concerns for much needed improvement in the ward community , but since Smith took over , I have been very disappointed in his LACK of concern for the ongoing problems in Ward 10 , He does not want to make any changes for the good of the commun ity or surrounding communities or for that matter , the rest of this great city. Honestly , he will never amount to all the hones t, caring efforts Phil Greazzo has done for his ward , Phil will not turn his back on the needs of his community , he will roll up his sleeves and work hard to restore the confidence and admiration for ward 10 and for this , I will always work with him to show far more growth and perserseverence to his many friends and neighbors and he has my love and vote on Nov 3rd
- Anne Harnish, Manchester

If the Union Leader had its choice the Board of Aldermen would be Republican, the school board all republican and the Mayor a Republican. We see where that got us in Congress, do we really want that in manchester. As to the notion that two independents were selected, the UL is correct but really, are they truly independent?
- Jeff, Manchester

I'm voting for Phil Greazzo because he notices things and he loves dogs.
- a. jaber, manchester

Thank you Union Leader. At the time of the primary it seemed there was no where to find information about the candidates for Alderman. I am glad to find out a little something before the general election.
- Anna, Manchester Ward 8

Shocking- the Union Leader picked all Republicans, except of course the only ward race that has two Democrats going head to head. I can assure you that these endorsements hold no weight what so ever. I hope that the educated voters in Manchester are doing their own research to figure out who would best represent them at City Hall.

*** Editor's note: The endorsements include two independents. ***
- Dawn Carter, Manchester NH

I voted for Bill Cashin every year and up until last year, I've supported Smith, but I can't afford Smith's voting on municipal taxes or his lack of ability to get anything accomplished in Ward 10. We need a constituent based alderman who will support lower taxes.

Phil Greazzo, you have my vote this year for certain.
- Barbara, Manchester Ward 10

Is Roy running for mayor at large, that is, at large in New Hampshire? His poster supporters live outside the city. If you want to tell us how to deal with our crime, drug dealers, municipal spending, ... ya got to live in the city. I'm voting for the cap, and the trade. That is, I'm trading one big spending democrat for a thoughtful, conservative minded WWll veteran.. oh, he lives in ward 4, his last name starts with a P. For parsimonious. VOTE !!
- tom, manchester,nh

I encourage Manchester citizens to vote Mark E. Roy for mayor. Mark E. Roy has been serving Manchester for many years and he would make an absolutely great mayor. Throughout his career, he has been fighting for advancment in oublic education as well as promoting the safety measures taken within schools. As a father himself, he has a great concern for the facilities in schools around Manchester and New Hampshire. He was vice chairman of the Citizens Task Force, a group that has advocated for improvemane in our public schools.

Throughout his career, Mark has always considered the future generations and has shown great fiscal responsibility. Mark E. Roy has always shown fiscal responsibility by considering the people before he makes a decision. He has always advocated for a fair tax system that doesn't hurt the middle class.

In order for Mark to continue his great work on education and fiscal responsibility. He needs a Democratic school board that will be willing to work together. so please, vote Democratic on Nov. 3rd.
- Douglas Marino, Newfields, NH

after having read your Aldermanic endorsements, I just wanted to say that I will be voting for Phil Greazzo in ward 10.
