After a handful of Christopher Vydfol’s friends watched his alleged killer be arraigned today on murder charges, they returned to the spot where the 20-year-old died to mourn his loss.

“Chris was a great man who looked out for everyone,” said Rob Brackett, who lives at the 157 Bedford Road home where Vydfol was murdered during a house party early Sunday.

“He was taken too early,” friend Steve Massua said.

Corey Furgal, 23, (left) is charged with second-degree murder after the death of Christopher Vydfol, 20, of Amherst.

Corey Furgal, 23, of 16 Bel Air Ave., Merrimack, has been charged with two counts of second degree murder for allegedly stabbing Vydfol about 1:30 a.m. He died a short time later at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua.

Friends and family say Vydfol was trying to break up a fight when he was stabbed. They say Vydfol’s two older brothers, Joe and Steve, were present when he was killed.

Furgal has a criminal record and was wanted by U.S. marshals last year for narcotics charges and a parole violation.

Judge Cliff Kinghorn ordered Furgal held without bail pending a Nov. 10 probable cause hearing in Merrimack District Court. Furgal did not enter a plea of guilty or innocence at his arraignment, which is standard procedure in felony cases.

Several of Furgal’s family members, including his mother and brother, were visibly emotional after the hearing, but declined comment.

Merrimack High School Principal Ken Johnson said both Furgal and Vydfol were students there but never graduated. However, several current students knew the suspect and victim.

“We will have services available to assist any students in need,” Johnson said.

Friends say Vydfol used to live on Chapel Lane in Merrimack, but had since moved to Amherst.

Law enforcement has been extremely tight-lipped about details of the homicide. A court affidavit of the case has been sealed as witnesses continue to be questioned.

Susan Morrell, a senior assistant attorney general, said outside court that Furgal stabbed Vydfol to death during the house party, which had more than a dozen attendees, shortly after Halloween ended early Sunday morning. She would not say if a weapon was recovered.

She also refused to say whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the killing or if more people under 21 years old were in attendance.

“It was generally a young crowd,” Morrell said.

Morrell refused to say if more arrests in the case are possible.

Tricia Uhlman, who is the murder victim’s aunt by marriage, said his parents are distraught.

“Everyone’s having a hard time with it because of the nature of it,” Uhlman said.

Brackett said Vydfol worked two jobs, including one at Joanne’s Kitchen and Coffee Shop in Nashua.

Numerous parked cars filled the driveway outside Brackett’s home, where he lives with his father, after the arraignment. About eight people in their early 20s declined to give specifics about what happened when Vydfol was killed, but remembered him as happy-go-lucky who used his bike to go dirt-jumping behind Cumberland Farms near Merrimack Common.

Location of home where man died after fight

“He always made people smile,” Brackett said. “He was just trying to help in a situation that turned out bad.”

A young woman who said she was Vydfol’s ex-girlfriend but declined to give her name said his favorite clothing brand was “Famous” by Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and had a large tattoo on his forearm that read “Family,” which is shown on Vydol’s MySpace.com profile.

“He was the biggest sweetheart,” she said.

To the family of Chris, you are in are thoughts and prayers, please let this kid rip, I had the opportunity to meet Chris and have him over for my house for dinner with my daughter, I have to say he was a little quiet here, but i knew he was a great kid, again my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
- Bill, Salem,MA

we miss you chris. last summer, a huge group of us hung out constantly. we found an old video of some funny stuff you used to do. watching it and seeing how alive you always were, breaks my heart. i didn't believe it at first, how could someone so alive be gone? thinking of you always, and keeping you in my prayers.
- anonymous, amherst/nashua, nh

Things are not always as they seem. The media has given you the only details that they had available to them. We do not know the facts and frankly I am writing this to comment on the simplicity of the minds of all of the people that have judged this tragedy. You have no idea what you are talking about and how your irrevelant comments could affect members of either of the families involved. I understand that this kind of behavoir is actually common and this is a confirmation of why our country is in trouble. I pray that you never get called for jury duty.
- Jan, Londonderry

First of all he has been in jail for the past year and he is a good kid he got his GED in jail and got his act together he has a great heart and wouldnt just go killing people at random second of all how can you guys talk about him like that when you dont even know him or with what is going on you guys should be pray and hoping the familys of both sides are ok because he has had a rough life his mother gave him up to her parents because she had him when she was real young and he grew up knowing that and he might not of made all the right choices but nobody is perfect and it dosnt help when there are people part of the gang he is in showing up to the court house say they are his brother when he dosnt even have a brother. so everyone should look at the overall perspective before they go makeing up their mind
- Lee, Manchester

A kid was murdered, show some respect and drop the sarcasm. I don't know Chris, but I do know some friends of his. No one should ever have to die like that! RIP Chris.
- Eric, litchfield

ROSANNE, i have a fact for you a kid is DEAD!!!!! now can we call his killer a monster..... are you looking for an excuse for murder??? oh let me guess he was a great kid ,dont judge him for being a murderer. violant crime he needs to be prosecuted fully. MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO EVERYONE AFFECTED BY THIS SAD TRAGEDY
- pat, manchester

I cannot believe what some of these people are saying. I didn't know chris well, but I used to hang out with his brother and I think what happened is messed up and I know for a fact Chris did not deserve what happened. Everyone who's being sarcastic about the situation should really take a look at themselves and determine if it really makes them feel better to make fun of a kid who was murdered.
- Greg, Merrimack

chris i cant believe your gone i try not to believe it but its real =[ you were my first love and you didnt deserve this. it is true what they say about chris he was a loving, caring, funny, nice person & so much more. i dont no how im going to react at your funeral chris i really dont but i want to be there to show my respect to you. i cant believe someone would do that to you. why you? this cory kid makes me sick. its crazy people were asking me if i had any pictures of you that arent on your myspace and i dont because there on your photobucket =[ us way back in the day at that hotel =[ im trying so hard not to cry again. you passing away is all ive been thinking about. we havent been the closest since we broke up but we made up months back. ill always have the memories of me and you i dont think i can act so crazy over another person like i did with you, remember that? i was looking at the comments i left you in 06 when we first started going out this feels like a nightmare i keep thinking you'll come back =[ i listened to CRAZY~aerosmith last night & couldnt even listen to the whole thing. that was our song we used to lay together in your room listening to that =[ my heart goes out to his family & friends that truly do love chris. i no that he taught/showed me what love is R.I.P chris you'll always be in my heart [you always were]

Used to bike with chris behind cumbys its a shame what happened. I'm just kind of surprised Corey made it out of that party alive after what happened
- anon, Merrimack

This is such a shame and a tragedy. Does any male under the age of 30 know how to walk away from a conflict anymore? Or is maintaining your street cred worth taking a life or having your own taken instead?
- Rob, Portsmouth

I am deeply saddened over what has taken place and the life that was taken.
Chris was my daughters first love and speaking for her I have to say that she is extremely upset over this.
Chris is a caring, considerate and kind person who did the best who could in any situation. I give him an A for effort. He would always turn to me for council to talk about things that were bothering him and so I developed a special place for him in my heart and that place still remains and will always be there for him.
My condolences to his family and friends. My heart goes out to everyone of you.

Mr. Barret -

Thank you.

Every now and then - way too infrequently - somebody comes along with an offer of something positive, on point, and totally relevant.

In short has something to say worth saying.

Your comment is spot on, right there, and more valid than almost any other. And it takes that, to move anywhere worth going.

Thank you for the best thing said - let's hope it gets somewhere.
- RP, New Boston

Good people you can make a difference and prevent this kind of violence. Consider for example the Thresholds program at Hillsborugh County jail. I taught this program for 8 years. Those in that program who are paired with you a volunteer return to jail 14% of the time whereas those who are not in the program return 60% of the time. That translates to less violent crime and a better world for us all.
- Greg Barret, Manchester

So typical after reading the comments that people are so quick to judge. So what if his my space was not what everyone thinks they should see. The face is a young man has lost his life. His family has lost a Son,brother, nephew, cousin. People have lost a best friend. Who are any of you to judge anyone. Because and quoting you he looked "GANGSTA" means he deserves to die. I dont think so. As horrible as this is. There are 2 familys who have lost a child. Show some compasion. Put yourself in the familys shoes.
- T.U., Merrimack

As a parent of two college-aged young men who attend school in Mass and NH - and also attend many more than their fair share of parties - on and off campus - my heart-felt sympathies go out to both of these families who have now tragically lost one of their own. They will never be the same again - very sad.
- Laura, Dedham, MA

Chris Vydfol.. I love you.. Many people are hurt. He was an innocent kid.. Please stop the comments that are sarcastic. Thank you.
- Joe Anctil, Nashua

Somedays I feel proud to be a member of the NH community and somedays I don't...

After reading these comments, today I don't.

May karma have mercy on you.
- Kelly, Bristol

I am SO glad my children are beyond the "gotta go to a head banger party" stage. What happened to the good old days, where the worst that happened is that the "Bif Tannen" of the group would pound the snot out of the guy with the big mouth? No killing, just an occasional whooping. Our culture is truly messed up. Parents, PAY ATTENTION, if you want your kids to survive.
- Johnny, Laconia

The 2 counts are 1 being that he acted knowingly and the other is that he acted recklessly
- Mike, New Boston

Chris is my family. He will be truly missed. He was only 20 yrs old and the last person i would of thought this would happen too. Hes a great kid. Enjoy life. He didnt deserve this.

want to comment on gsup,nashua
if u knew these two then would know that chris wouldnt pull out a knife on someone else... i guess u didnt know him to well.
- Leesh, Nashua,nh

two counts of murder bc one is saying he did it recklessly the other is saying he did it knowingly. He will only be found quilty of one charge
- md, merrimack, nh

i think anyone who is laughing at this is just pitiful i was a friend of chris and his death is nothing but a shame please hold all negitive comments and pray for the vydfol family
- Brian, merrimack

I don't mean to detract from this tragic occurrence but this guy is being charged with "two" counts of second degree murder? Who is the other victim? The article just doesn't make any sense in that regard.
- John, New Boston

Some of your comments make me want to vomit. Chris will be missed greatly. To all of you who think of this as a joke, GROW UP. Please pray for his family and friends (who are all wonderful kids, I know them personally).
- Justina, merrimack nh

i think its disgusting that some of you people make a joke of this horrific murder- karl. how about some compassion for the family members left behind...and the friends of chris who watched him dying! its just another news story to you pathetic people..something to talk about because your own lives are boring. this is horrific. you should all be ashamed of yourselves. rip chris.
- mma, merrimack, nh

A "Real" Gangsta wouldn't have a MySpace page.
- TK, Manchester

Checkout his myspace he's pretty gangster lol!
- D, Manchester NH

Sounds like this kid has been in trouble with the law before. I think it has less to do with the party and more to do with the fact that this kid is simply a bad guy. There doesn't always need to be an external reason for someone to commit a crime.
- Mike, Bedford

Hard to imagine this "outstanding citizen" stabbing someone... After all he owns the title of - U.S. marshal's fugitive of the week in New Hampshire for the week of Oct. 23, 2008!! Also a warrant for his arrest for criminal threatening... The sentence this time around she be maximum with no parole... 23 years old and a good start to being a career criminal!! Your parents must be so proud of you!!
- WBG, Manchester

If he was wanted, and arrested in May, why was he not in prison?
- tom, manchester,nh

It makes me laugh that people are already commenting on this when there have been absolutely NO details released. How can anyone form an opinion of what happened when you don't KNOW what happened? Life is not black and white, folks. Let's at least find out one or two facts before we start making anyone into a monster.
- Rosanne, Manchester

Ok Bob your right, no more holiday parties...that should stop the senseless crimes. LOL. I'm glad your not my neighbor, because I have parties all the time. Bottom line; John S is right. It all comes down to who you associate with...seems the person who is accused would have ended up in jail eventually.
- Sydney, Londonderry

Once again it's a crime committed by someone who should have been behind bars. A parole violator who was arrested after that and he was still on the street. Cmon Judges. Do your jobs and get tough.
- Bob, Bedford

It seems every year at some holiday party somone injures of kills somebody simply because everybody involved is just plain and stupidly drunk or high. I think the neighbors need to check on thier other neighbors and keep thier local PD on speed dial. Police needs to crack down on these parties period.
- Bob, Manchester

Are we sure it wasn't an accident or self defense...
- Tom, Concord

I know both of these kids nd corey could hve handled chris easily I dont think he would pull a knife unless he had to? how do you know chris didnt pull a knife on corey and got killed for it.
- gsup, nashua

I think it was George Bush is fault !!!!!
- sam, Manchester nh

Another kid about to live the glory that is gangsta Rap.

With proper housing, medical care, and weight training equipment this kid should be out and in tip top shape by the time he's fifty.

What a waste of two lives.
- Deb, Derry

Once again, it comes down to who you are associating with. Who allowed this person onto the property? The police should have been called immediately when he showed up.
- John S., Nashua, NH

Furgal was the U.S. marshal's fugitive of the week in New Hampshire the week of Oct. 23, 2008, after being sought for violating parole for narcotics possession He was later captured. He was arrested in May on a warrant issued by Manchester police for criminal threatening.

Damn shame Furgal wasn't in jail on those previous crimes - rather than attending a party with kids.
- Catherine, Manchester

You jest Karl, but you have hit the overall point on the bulls-eye. We, as a society, must address the "Kill Culture," we have created. It stems from multiple influences, but exists none-the-less. It is time to ask why the younger members of our society feel compelled towards violence. Before I get bombarded with a deluge of, "I'm young and I don't kill," responses, let me point out that I am not claiming that this applies to all of our citizenry. It does apply to a specific demographic though. When we get upset over the number of homicides in NH we should as if they are a sign demanding introspective thought rather than finger pointing. It is a systemic implosion, not a single point of failure. We should address it as a complete disease rather than individual symptoms.
- Simkin, Nashua

Must be one of those Halloween Parties and given the background of the accused it kind of limits what it was over. Safe to say it probably had nothing to do with a party sized Snickers or Hershey miniature bar.
- Jack Alex, Manchester

I bet they were arguing over American foreign policy and third-world economic development.
